As an activist since my early teens, I'm finding myself feeling a little fatigued lately. I know part of it is that there are now SO many opportunities to engage from home, from phone and text banking to webinars, testifying at hearings via Zoom and so forth, but much of that is energizing, at least when you get to talk to other activists.
This is either a really strange idea or a brilliant one: Mikey Fivebucks, an entrepreneur from Toronto, is working on setting up a catnip dispensary with different strains of catnip for cats to enjoy. He says that the stuff sold in stores just isn't good enough for cats and that it lacks the lasting power that the catnip he wants to sell will have.
It's so fun when there are so many frog stories of the week that we can share them together. My teen ran to me today and demanded to know if I knew that Kermit and Piggy are divorced! Haha, yes, but I also assured him that the two are always on again, off again, have been since I've known them, and that they could probably get back together if Piggy did some growing. Honestly I always thought Kermit could, too!
Sometimes it's fun to picture who people in real life might be if they were animated characters. When it comes to Family Guy, it can be really hard to separate the actors from their vocal talents. I can't picture anyone but Seth Green as Chris, for example, just because his voice is so unique.
A Grateful Dead tribute will be on the Twitch channel The Relix Channel next week. On March 18, DJead Night will be hosting this event featuring several of the band's classic performances. The event will kick off at 11:00 PM ET so be sure to tune in.
With Covid going on, there aren't as many awesome concerts to attend as usual, so this is one of the few anyone can attend safely from home. Do you know of any other good online performances? How about live ones from a distance?
Once I saw an episode of one of my crime shows--CSI or Law and Order or something to that effect--where a poor woman was being stalked inside her own home. Her stalker had installed peep holes and cameras and other ways to keep tabs on her at all times. I don't know if I could ever feel safe again after a situation like that. I'm the kind of person who even checks public restrooms for cameras, I am so uneasy about it.
It sounds so bizarre, but did you know that people make crafts out of their pets' fur? If your cats or dogs shed as much as ours, you know this is a totally pain-free situation for them. I can brush my dogs and get enough fur, any day of the week, to make a few crafts.
Fertilizer is one of my weak areas when it comes to gardening. I tend to use the wrong kind, or too much, or not mix it well. I've killed way too many indoor plants with the wrong or too much fertilizer. Today I read about a new-to-me fertilizer that really shouldn't be so surprising, but I was still surprised to learn how popular it is.
If you have a sweet tooth like I do, you already know that when you want a treat, it needs to be quick! My grandma kept a tub of peanut butter by her bedside just for this reason, and her treat is also my favorite! I give it a twist by topping a spoonful with some dark chocolate chips. Yum!
Alas, I don't have crocuses in my front yard anymore. I did for years and I need to plant some more this fall because it's always such a welcome sight to see them return in the spring. Everything feels so light and hopeful when those little purple and white petals peek out from the ground!
The Seattle Times just published a list of the top places to get takeout food during quarantine and I have to say my stomach is rumbling. I would love to nibble on so many of these items, but the dumplings from XCJ are really calling my name today!
Most of us love at least some form of music, and many songs speak to us like poetry. I can think of so many songs that sound like they were poems put to music, and aren't a lot of songs like that anyway?
When I think of these kinds of songs, I almost always go to artists like Alicia Keys or Norah Jones, but think of artists like The Silent Comedy or even Blink 152. Some of those lyrics are deeply moving and profound, using imagery that we expect from poets.
What songs do you most associate with poetry? Share them in the chat.
The number of available games, from video games to board games and even RPGs, grows every single week. It's difficult to stay on top of all of the new games to try as so many are released one after another. People are even using Kickstarter to build games from home to help explode this market.
Lots of people have been using their increased time at home to hone in new hobbies and skills, like cooking. If you haven't, that's okay, too! If you have, what kinds of weird recipes have you dreamt up while at home?
Flavored teas are a hit with lots of people, and as a Midwestern girl who grew up chugging sweet tea, I can assure there there's a flavor for everyone. Have you ever tried blue raspberry or pina colada in your tea? It sounds so weird but it's delicious, and if you brew your own tea and buy your own syrup flavors, you can make it for just a few cents a glass.
